Today it reached 42* here in southern MN. This time last week it was in the single digits. That's kind of hard on a horse, not to mention the people. We left the boys in their midweights this morning, but it got warmer than expected. Luckily, we came home a bit early and I was able to take blankets off around 2pm. They weren't sweaty underneath so I got lucky on that one. It looks like they can be nekkid for a few days before the snow we're expecting over the weekend. I think this is the slow beginning of spring.

Isn't this strange? We're having the same sort of thing in VA. I can't remember too many single digit temps in the 12 years we've been here, but we had a few nights that cold in the last couple of weeks. Then last night it only went down to 40 and is supposed to be in the 50's all this week. Meanwhile, though, we still have a layer of very solid, compact ice covering many of the fields, now with a nice slick film of melted water over top. Nice.
The older horses seem to be tolerating it much better than the younger ones. Maybe because they've seen it before? Maybe because most of them just have more sense and hunker down in the shelters rather than meandering around on bad footing?
I noticed our neighbors, who very rarely use round bales for their horses, put one out over the weekend. Our sheds are a wreck from haying inside for the last week or so and not being able to clean up very easily. Ah well, I guess that's what 50-degree days are for, eh?

I feel for you guys with the ice. We've been lucky and have only snow. Not bad at all. This weekend we may get some freezing rain, but nothing like you all out East got. I agree that the oldsters know how to deal with it better than the young ones. My three stayed out last night and tonight. With temps only going to around 25, they are fine outside. I did put a blanket on the oldest one, but the other two are still nekkid. They are both fat and can afford to lose a few pounds. I really hope the weatherman is wrong about the snow.

My old girl did better than me, she's fine, I'm sick - but getting over it. She's got her Wookie winter coat on, though I still kept her blanketed. She's one that prefers it cold in the winter. She had a hard time in December because it was way too warm here, but she's been doing fine through the sub-zero temps. Sunday she was outside running around playing in the snow, while the youngsters huddled in the corner.
I'm in Ohio. Last week we had 17" of snow overnight, yesterday and today it was in the 40's. What a mess. No ice this time though, so I'm grateful for that. I agree, ice is the worst.
